The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Season 1 DVD, HBO
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency stars Jill Scott and is based on the best-selling novels. The bonus features in this set are outstanding.

Jill Scott stars in this HBO series which takes place in Botswana. It is about a woman who starts her own detective agency in a small town. It’s a fun show and very uplifting. The characters are delightful and the storylines are enjoyable. With her attentive secretary/assistant Grace (Anika Noni Rose), Mma Ramotswe (Scott) uses her intuition, cunning, intelligence, and sometimes just plain luck to solve her cases.

Bonus Features in the DVD Box Set

The bonus features are worth watching. This is the first series filmed entirely in Botswana. The feature on the “making of” the series is interesting and shows how the locals are used in the show. It also shows how the creators and writers weave a lot of the culture of Botswana into the stories and the characters. They do insist that this is a fictional show, so they do take liberties with some things. But on the whole, it is a good representation of the country and the culture.

“The Beat of Botswana” shows many of the local musicians. Music, singing and dancing is a big part of the culture. The sound of Africa is unique and the musicians have their own way of interpreting their music and their musical heritage.

The History of Botswana

“Botswana: The Gem of Africa” is a fascinating feature covering the history, culture, and people of the country. Botswana was a Protective of Britain and received independence in 1966. It is a Parliamentary Democracy in the middle of the continent. The diamond industry is the biggest source of commerce there, and the industry is highly governed, unlike some of the other countries in Africa. Botswana is the largest producer of diamonds in the world.

And unlike their neighbor to the south, Botswana has always been an integrated country. The flag is blue to represent water however they do not have an ocean on any of their borders since they are land-locked, black and white to show the racial harmony of the country.

Their scenery, animals, and friendly people combine to make this a great vacation destination, and since The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency has been on the air, the travel industry has grown.

The series is a feel-good show with fun characters and a taste of Botswana. The bonus features are entertaining as well as educational. Jill Scott makes this a charming show. She is a woman of substance, inside and out, and represents the natural women of Botswana.
