The Mod Squad was a show that brought together the establishment with the pop culture of the time, and included all the lingo that marked this time in history.

The Mod Squad was one of the many successful productions from the legendary producer Aaron Spelling. Running from 1968 to 1973 this show captured the hearts of young viewers as it contained the look and sound of the era.

Clarence Williams III, Peggy Lipton, and Michael Cole as Linc, Julie, and Pete

This series brought together three young actors who took the country by storm as they played hip, cool, undercover cops. Linc, Julie, and Pete (Clarence Williams, III, Peggy Lipton, and Michael Cole) managed to infiltrate gangs and get into situations the average, everyday cop could not.

With great mod clothing, and young attitudes, the trio helped bring down the bad guys. The unorthodox trio of cops appealed to a younger audience than the other cop shows that preceded it. The three were rebels yet as they became deeper and deeper entrenched in their police work they took on the authority of cops without the heavy attitude.

They could relate to the kids on the street, infiltrate gangs, blend in with the crowd and work undercover catching the bad guys and also making an impact on those who were about to go astray.

Pop Culture Meets The Establishment

Captain Adam Greer (Tige Andrews), a veteran on the force had confidence in his new cops and even though at times he faced opposition from his counterparts, he felt that his decision to bring the trio into the force was the right thing to do. It saved the three from going down the wrong path themselves, and they turned out to be better cops than even he ever imagined.

Linc, Julie, and Pete were a team and their relationship was what made them successful as cops and as actors. They were a great trio and their characters appealed to audiences. They were fresh, young, and hip. And they proved that even though they did not wear a uniform or behave like the others in the department, they could get the job done.

The time in which this series aired was riddled with activism. The Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam war, Hippies, Flower Power, and drugs were the main stories on the evening newscasts. The Mod Squad confronted the issues but not from the view of the establishment. This series was a fresh approach to police dramas.

The Mod Squad Season 2 Volume 2 contains thirteen digitally remastered episodes on three DVDs. The episodes originally aired from December 30, 1969 to April 7, 1970. Although some of the ideas are dated, the fun in watching these episodes is looking back forty years.
