Sad Love Story is one of those typical melodramatic stories about a young couple who fall in love only to be torn apart from each other - for their own good of course.
Joon-young (Kwon Sang-woo) and her friend Hae-In (Kim Hee-sun) have shared a connection since they were kids. Their kiddie puppy-love eventually turns into real love where the two think nothing can tear their love apart. Life however becomes complicated. Hae-In's aunt marries an American soldier who promises that Hae-In (blind since childhood) will finally get the surgery she needs to regain her eyesight and moves to New York. Joon-young is suddenly sent to Seoul to live with his father.
Misled into believing Joon-young is dead, Hae-In attempts to put her life back together, alone. Years later, she returns to Korea as a singer engaged to marry her producer Gun-woo (Yeon Jung-hoon).
While there are quite a number of fairly noteworthy dramatic moments, it overall was not the most satisfying viewing experience. The strong performances from all 3 leads, the wide diversity of locations (countryside, cityscapes of Seoul and New York) and music somehow were not enough to make the 20 hour drama feel worth the time investment. However, a friend whose mother had also watched Sad Love Story felt it was one of the best she'd seen and enjoyed it immensely. I must say though, the title doesn't leave much room for the unpredictable. Perhaps knowing exactly what to expect made the experience less exciting.
YA Entertainment packages all 20 episodes in a box set with about an hour of bloopers, over an hour of Behind the Scenes making of footage and 8-piece postcard set.
