DVD Releases of Dramatic TV Series July 21-28Charlie’s Angels, Prison Break Top List of New Dramas Available
This month offers a variety of dramatic television series on DVD.
Crime and science fiction dominate the end-of-the-month dramatic television releases. Three beautiful young women detectives work to solve crimes (Charlie’s Angels), and an innocent man strives to free himself from his guilty conviction (Prison Break). Entering the science fiction realm, a small crew fights for survival (Battlestar Galactica) and young women are brainwashed into performing work for a laboratory (Dollhouse). Dramatic Television on DVD Available July 21Prison Break: The Final Break (also on Blu-ray) This is a straight-to-DVD summation of the acclaimed action crime drama series designed to fill in some blanks and tie up loose ends. In the series, which ran from 2005 through 2009, an engineer who designed a prison is forced to aid his convicted brother in escaping a conspiracy against him. Prison Break, which was shot on location in Texas, Illinois, and Canada, was nominated for an Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards.
Charlie’s Angels: Complete Fourth Season By the fourth season, Farrah Fawcett and Kate Jackson had left the series, leaving Jaclyn Smith with her new partners Cheryl Ladd and Shelley Hack. The three lovely private investigators work for the mysterious Charlie, who contacts them by speakerphone with their various assignments. The series ran from 1976 through 1981, with additional changes in the leading cast members.
Dramatic Television on DVD Available July 28Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series (also on Blu-ray) A small fleet of refugees hunted by robot clones fight to save the human race by searching for a fabled thirteenth colony called Earth. The series won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Special Visual Effects for a Series in 2007 and 2008. Running from 2004-2009, this sci-fi remake reworks the original 1978 epic television series that starred Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, and Lorne Greene.
Dollhouse: Season One (also on Blu-ray) This new series follows a futuristic organization that uses “Dolls” (that is, DNA-altered humans) to perform difficult assignments using false memory implants. Created by Joss Whedon, whose writing-producing-directing credits include Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Firefly, the series already has generated a loyal following of sci-fi fans in just one season.
