Castle – Season One

DVD Review

Sep 18, 2009 Francine Brokaw

Nathan Fillion stars in this detective series, with a twist. He's not a detective. He's a novelist.

Richard Castle (Fillion) is a brilliant novelist who writes about murders. He has countless best-sellers and a loyal following. Castle is called on to help the NYPD with a case that is similar to one that he has written about. Assigned to Agent Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), Castle puts his detective-writing talent to the test and actually helps Beckett solve the murders. Being a murder-mystery writer has its advantages. He brings a different eye to the situation.

After the resolution of that case, Castle manages to wangle his way onto Beckett’s team as a regular. He’s still not a cop, but his history writing about crimes comes in handy. And, in his latest novel, he killed off the main character, so he is planning on starting a new series with Beckett as the model for his new character.

Can a NYPD Detective Work in Harmony With a Crime Writer?

This is a cute series. Nathan Fillion is adorable. He’s always taking notes, even in the midst of a difficult situation. He is eager to capture the reality of being a detective and even though Beckett is not thrilled about him tagging along, secretly they have a fondness for each other.

And Castle’s daughter sees the connection between the two. Castle’s mother is another fun character. She’s eccentric and witty. She adds a little spice to the show.

But the best part is the interplay between Beckett and Castle. These two characters have a chemistry that lights up the screen. Castle is a fun-loving, endearing man, and Beckett is a by-the-book detective. In the beginning of the season she was extremely rugged, but as Castle influences her little by little throughout the season, she begins to soften at times. She’s still a tough NYPD detective, but he’s managing to loosen her up, just a bit.

Castle has been a big hit for ABC and the first season has garnered a loyal following of viewers who are anxiously awaiting the second season and more interplay between Castle and Beckett, not to mention the fun Castle brings to a gruesome crime scene. His quips are priceless. Even when he is in the midst of a horrific crime scene, he manages to come up with a one-liner that steals the scene. His humor is something new to Beckett, but it definitely lightens up the detectives who have been facing these grisly crime scenes for years.
